According to
sociologist Ross Koppel, 70% of the patients have wrong information in their
medical records. Medical errors are prone to happen due to the wrong medical
records. One such instance occurred for a 20-year-old patient called Morgan
Gleason. In Morgan's record, it was written that she was pregnant twice and had
diabetes while none of that was true.
Susan Sheridan faced
a similar situation around 20 years ago. Her husband Pat had surgery for the
removal of a mass and the hospital pathology report identified ‘synovial cell sarcoma’
which is a type of cancer. This report failed to reach the neurosurgeon and he
assured them that the tumour was removed completely. This error was not
discovered until 6 months later when Pat felt distressed and was rushed to the
hospital. Cancer had affected his spinal cord by then and he died two and a
half years later.
According to a study
conducted by CNBC, more than 250,000 people in the USA die every year from
medical mistakes. The solution to this problem is the centralised data
collection of all the patient's medical records that can be accessed by other
doctors as well during an emergency. This not only helps in maintaining all
your medical records online but also prevent any miscommunication by the
patient as the records only go from one doctor to another. The centralised
database can hold the facial data of the patients as well to help
hospitals identify the patients when they are unconscious and know about their
medical history. This prevents any usage of substances or procedures that are
not suitable for the patient resulting in lesser medical complications.
Medinin aims towards
eliminating this miscommunication by providing a centralised centre for all the
medical data of patients. The patients need to upload their medical reports which
can be used by the doctors during an emergency or during even while
recommending medication or tests. Medinin can also help patients in searching
for medical specialists around them who are verified and registered. The
patients can also check if their insurance is compatible with the hospitals
nearby. The patients can receive a follow-up SMS from their doctor for the
confirmation of an appointment and taking the essential medication on time as
well.
In this ever-growing
healthcare world, the majority of the medical errors can be avoided by allowing the
doctors to access the medical records of their patients in a more organised
way. Medinin is making progress towards helping this very important problem
that the healthcare world is facing.
